Description of Mark
The mark consists of Awareness Centered Psychotherapy (ACP) begins with a fundamental phenomenological insight: our thoughts, emotions, memories, and even our sense of self present themselves in awareness. They arise in awareness the way any other phenomenon does, like a sensation, a sound, or a moment of perception. When we look closely at our inner life, we notice that everything we call “the self” shows up this way: as something that appears, shifts, fades, and returns.Phenomenology calls this “givenness,” the way experience offers itself to us. When we take this seriously, it changes how we understand the self. Instead of being the one who has experience, the self becomes something that appears within experience. This doesn’t diminish its importance; it simply places it in the same field as everything else we encounter. Most forms of therapy, from psychodynamic to cognitive to mindfulness, treat the self as the center of experience. ACP shifts that frame. It doesn’t take anything away from the self or all the ways it forms through childhood, relationships, and everything we’ve lived. It simply says the self is something that shows up within experience; it is something we can notice, rather than the one who’s having the experience. Thoughts, emotions, shame states, internalized caregivers, defenses, and trauma reactions are all real, but they are contents of awareness, not the awareness itself.ACP is not spiritual or metaphysical. It’s a very grounded, phenomenological way of working. It keeps what works in psychodynamic therapy – insight, relational meaning-making, attention to self-states – but places those processes inside a wider context. Therapy begins with the basics: establishing safety, noticing patterns, and understanding how the client’s relational patterns have developed over time. Once there is trust, the therapist can invite the client to sense the difference between an experience and the awareness that’s noticing it.This distinction can create a noticeable shift. Emotions can feel less fused with identity. Shame may be experienced as something that arises, not as a definition of the person. Trauma-driven states can become easier to stay with because they’re no longer taken as the whole self. Even transference may become more workable: instead of feeling stuck in an old dynamic, the client can watch it unfold.ACP strengthens emotional tolerance through what it calls “dual awareness,” or feeling an emotion while also noticing the awareness that holds it. The idea shows up in phenomenology and in psychodynamic thinking as the observing ego, but ACP talks about it in very ordinary terms. You’re not stepping back or trying to manage the feeling. You’re sensing the emotion and the awareness it appears in at the same time. When that’s available, the emotion often feels more understandable and easier to stay with. It’s not distancing; it’s simply a way of being in the experience without feeling overwhelmed by it.ACP isn’t meant to replace other therapies. It sits comfortably alongside them and works well with relational work, cognitive approaches, somatic methods, and mindfulness. It doesn’t change the techniques themselves, just the perspective you’re working from when you use them.A clinical example might be someone with long-standing anxiety rooted in early trauma who learns how to feel the fear without being swallowed by it. When he can notice both the frightened inner child and the awareness surrounding it, the experience feels more manageable. The fear still shows up, but it no longer takes over.ACP’s key insight is that all our inner experiences, thoughts, feelings, impulses, and memories arise within awareness rather than defining who we are. Once someone has a felt sense of this distinction, the experience can shift. Emotions have more room to be felt without taking over, old relational patterns lose some of their grip, and the suffering that used to feel absolute becomes more workable. You still feel everything, just without being swept away by it.
