The mark consists of a design of a compass with the alphabet letters N, W, S, and E in counter-clockwise order starting at the top with two salmons with water splashes, one on the left and one on the right of the compass facing toward the compass, followed by two Japanese characters that transliterate to "HOKKYOKU", four Japanese characters that transliterate to "SAAMON", and the alphabet letters "NORWAY", each of the foregoing set of words in three separate lines under the compass. All of the foregoing designs (i.e., the compass, two salmon with water splashes, and three lines of words) are framed by a folded ribbon loop shaped like a square wherein the top portion and bottom portion are curved outward like a semi-circle. The letters "HOKKYOKU SALMON" appear on the top curved portion of the ribbon and the letters "FROM EXTREME NORTH" appear on the bottom curved portion of the ribbon, both horizontally written, and five Japanese characters that transliterate to "HOKKYOKU" appear vertically on the left vertical portion of the ribbon and six Japanese characters that transliterate to "NORUWEESAN" appear vertically on the right vertical portion of the ribbon.
