The mark consists of a fanciful design consisting of a cross in red at the center within a gold circle, and the gold circle is surrounded by a red and gold border, and gold rays extend from the circle. There are four lines made up of various gold design elements extending diagonally from the center circle design. These design elements are made up of a crown above an anchor, a crown above the letters "RAF" within a wreath with wings on either side of the wreath, a crown above a cannon with an exploding bomb on each side of the cannon, and three features and banners. Between each diagonal on the left and right side of the mark is a design consisting of a red crown against a gold and red leaf, below which are two gold circles having red and gold deer heads therein and the circles having red and gold borders, and beneath and in the middle of the circles is a gold crown design with yellow and red rays extending upward in a semicircle pattern, with red and gold banners beneath the crown, and on either side of this crown and ray design is a design having the letters "NZ" in gold within a gold wreath with a gold and red banner at the bottom of the wreath and gold crown design at the top of the wreath. Between each diagonal on the top and bottom of the mark is a design of a deer's head with antlers in gold and red, below which is a gold crown design above a red and gold Maltese cross, which is above design consisting of a red "X" within a gold oval, with red and gold rays and rectangles extending from the oval, and on either side of the "X" design is a gold miscellaneous design within a yellow wreath design with a gold crown at the top of the wreath and a red and gold banner across the bottom of the wreath. The left and right halves of the mark are mirror images of each other, as are the top and bottom portions of the mark. The entire mark appears against a red background. Four black horizontal pin stripes pass through the entire mark.
