The mark consists of two closed fists stacked one on top of the other. The closed fists can be described as four fingers curled into the palm with the thumb retracted and displaying the knuckles. The horizontally-positioned top fist sits on top of the vertically-positioned bottom fist. The image of the two closed fists stacked on top of each other creates the image of a "latte stone." A "latte stone" is the term for a pillar capped by a hemispherical stone capital with the flat side facing up. The ancient Chamorro people of the Northern Mariana Islands used these types of pillars to construct houses. Ancient "latte stones" are found throughout the Mariana Islands and are viewed as a sign of Chamorro identity. The term "Ginen Marianas" means "From the Marianas" in Chamorro.
