The top, upper most Japanese character transliterates to "Tan", translates to "red soil, medicines", and appears in a circle. Under the circle is a second Japanese character. Under the second Japanese character is a series of Japanese characters that appear in a horizontal row within the vertical design. Under the horizontal row is a final Japanese character. With the exception of the upper most Japanese character which appears in a circle, all the remaining Japanese characters that appear in the mark, when taken together, transliterate to "Saikyo" and translate to "Western City".
