The mark consists of an image of a black and white locomotive with a gold-colored headlight and with black and white smoke coming out of the top, numbers "488" written in white at five places on the front portion of the locomotive, the background has two flags placed over blue sky, placed on the right of locomotive is the state flag of New Mexico in combination red and yellow colors and outlined in black, placed on the left is the state flag of Colorado in combination of red, white, yellow and blue colors outlined in black, surrounding this image is placed a circular gold-colored ring with red colored border on both outside and inside, having wording "CUMBRES & TOLTEC SCENIC RR" in black color inside the ring, with a black colored triangle before "CUMBRES" and after "RR", a red colored banner outlined in black hanging from two pointed black and white bars emerging from the bottom of the engine, and the stylized wording "PRIDE OF THE ROCKIES" written in gold appearing on the banner, with a gold chevron-shaped design underlining the word "ROCKIES".
